タオルの日（Towel Day）の英語の授業アイデアとワークシート

タオルを見せ、ふだんどこで使うかを英語で聞く。『銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド』という本の中では、タオルが宇宙の旅行者にとっていちばん役に立つ物とされていることを紹介し、英語ページの音声で本文第3段落を聞かせる。体に巻く・上で眠る・振って助けを呼ぶ、の3つの使い道を確認する。

🗣️ What is this? Yes, it's a towel. When do you use it? / In a famous book, a towel is the most useful thing for a space traveler. / You can wrap it around you when it is cold. / You can sleep on it, and you can wave it when you need help.

I would take ___ because ___. と You can ___ with it. の型を板書し、would は「もし宇宙に行くなら」という仮の話に使うと短く説明する。先生の例（I would take a towel because it is very useful.）を全員でくり返し、何人かに自分なら何を持っていくかを1文で言わせる。

🗣️ If you went to space, what would you take? / I would take a towel because it is very useful. / Repeat after me. / What would you take? Tell me in one sentence.

4人グループで、宇宙に持っていく物を1つだけ決めさせる。その物の使い道を You can ... の形で3つ英語で書かせ、最後に I would take ... because ... の1文で理由をまとめさせる。机間指導で、使い道が宇宙の場面に合っているかを聞いて回る。

各班30秒で発表させる。全班の発表のあと、自分の班以外でいちばん説得力のあった班に投票させ、結果を板書する。最後にタオルデー（5月25日）のあいさつ Happy Towel Day! と Don't panic! を全員で言って終える。

英語ページの音声で本文第1段落を聞かせ、電車でタオルを持っている人たちがだれかを問う。第4段落を聞かせ、作家ダグラス・アダムズが2001年5月11日に亡くなり、その2週間後にファンがタオルを持って彼をしのんだのが始まりだと確認する。だれがこの日を作ったか（政府・会社・ファン）を選ばせ、スター・ウォーズの日（5月4日）もファンの間から広まった記念日であることを紹介する。

🗣️ On May 25, you may see people with towels on the train. Who are they? / Who made Towel Day? The government? A company? Fans? / Fans made it. They carried towels to remember Douglas Adams. / Star Wars Day on May 4 also spread among fans.

タオルデーを「日付・持ち物・あいさつ」の3点に分けて表にする。日付は亡くなった2週間後の5月25日、持ち物は作中で宇宙のヒッチハイカーにいちばん役に立つとされるタオル、あいさつは Happy Towel Day! や作中のガイドブックの表紙の言葉 Don't panic!。作品を読んだ人ならわかる「合言葉」になっていることが、広まった理由の一つだと気づかせる。

🗣️ Let's look at three parts: the date, the item, and the greeting. / Why a towel? In the book, it is the most useful thing in space. / The greeting is "Happy Towel Day!" or "Don't panic!" / Fans of the book understand it right away.

3〜4人のグループで、好きな本・映画・ゲームを1つ選ばせ、設計シートに記念日の日付・持ち物・あいさつ・過ごし方を書かせる。日付・持ち物・あいさつには、それぞれ作品にもとづく理由を1つずつつけさせる。作品を知らない人にも伝わるよう、作品の説明を1文入れることを条件にする。

各グループ1分で英語のプレゼンをさせる。On this day, people ... because ... の文を必ず入れる。発表のあと、聞き手から英語で質問を1つ受ける。先生はタイマーで時間を管理する。

参加してみたい記念日に投票させる。最後に、タオルデーはもともと亡くなった作家をしのぶために生まれた日であることにもどり、ユーモアで人をしのぶことについてどう思うかを一言ずつ聞いて終える。
