He play tennis every Sunday.

'He play tennis.' Many English learners forget the -s in 'He plays', even when they know the rule. Research shows that grammar is learned in a natural order, and the third person -s comes late.
Why? The -s is short and hard to hear. Also, 'he' already tells us who is doing the action, so the -s adds little meaning. And Japanese has no rule like this.

「He play tennis.」多くの英語学習者は、ルールを知っていても「He plays」の -s を忘れてしまいます。研究によると、文法は自然な順番で身についていき、三単現の -s は遅くに来ます。なぜでしょうか。
-s は短くて聞き取りにくいのです。また、he がすでに誰が動作をしているかを教えてくれるので、-s はほとんど意味を足しません。そして、日本語にはこのようなルールがありません。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
ルールを知っていても三単現の -s が身につきにくい理由を説明しているので C。
Q2. Why does the -s add little meaning?
'he' already tells us who is doing the action, so the -s adds little meaning とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, a "natural order" is ...
natural は「自然な」、order は「順番」。教えなくても自然に起こるいつもの順番なので D。
Third person singular -s, as in 'He plays', is taught in the first year of junior high school, but even advanced learners often drop it when speaking. In the 1970s, Dulay and Burt studied children learning English and found a similar order of acquisition regardless of their first language. Forms like -ing came early, while third person -s came late.
In 2001, a meta-analysis of 12 studies with 924 learners showed that this order could largely be explained by five factors, including how easy a form is to hear and how often it appears. The -s is hard to hear, adds little meaning, and requires thinking about person, number and tense at the same time.

Q1. What did Dulay and Burt find?
found a similar order of acquisition regardless of their first language とあるので A。regardless of ~「~に関係なく」。
Q2. How many learners were included in the 2001 meta-analysis?
a meta-analysis of 12 studies with 924 learners とあるので D。12 は研究の数、5 は要因の数。
Q3. Why might advanced learners still drop the -s when speaking?
最終文で、聞き取りにくく、意味をほとんど足さず、人称・数・時制を同時に考える必要があるとしているので C。A は「上級者もルールは知っている」という前提と合わない。
He walks, she likes, it rains. The rule is easy. Add -s to the verb after a third person singular subject. Even so, learners are notoriously slow to acquire this ending.
In the 1970s, Dulay and Burt found that children from different first-language backgrounds followed a very similar sequence, mastering forms such as -ing early and third person -s late. A 2001 meta-analysis by Goldschneider and DeKeyser, covering 12 studies and 924 learners, showed that five factors, including perceptual salience, semantic complexity and frequency in input, accounted for most of this order.
Third person -s does badly on several of them. It is short and hard to hear. It is largely redundant, because the subject already shows person and number. And it depends on three features at once. That meta-analysis left out one influence, the learner's first language.
In 2009, Luk and Shirai reviewed studies showing that speakers of Japanese, Korean and Chinese mostly acquired plural -s and articles later than the natural order predicted but possessive 's earlier, in line with similarities to their first languages. Other research finds that learners who know the rule may still miss -s errors when they process sentences in real time.

He walks、she likes、it rains。
Q1. In this context, what does "largely redundant" mean?
because the subject already shows person and number と理由が続くので、主語がすでに示している情報を重ねているだけ=B。redundant は「余分な、重複した」。
Q2. According to Luk and Shirai, which form did Japanese, Korean and Chinese speakers acquire earlier than predicted?
plural -s and articles later than the natural order predicted but possessive 's earlier とあるので D。but の後ろが「早かった」もの。
Q3. What is the main point of the final part of the passage?
最終文 learners who know the rule may still miss -s errors when they process sentences in real time と一致するので A。ルールを知っていることと、すぐに使えることは別。
