英語で教科を学ぶ方法は、ヨーロッパではCLIL(クリル:内容言語統合型学習)、大学などではEMI(英語による授業)と呼ばれます。

In some schools, students learn science or history in English. People say this is good for both English and the subject. Many studies show that these students have better English.
But in Germany, researchers found that these students were already good at school before they started. When the researchers took this into account, the extra effect became very small. So learning in English can help, but it is not magic.

Q1. What do students do in these schools?
students learn science or history in English とあるので B。
Q2. What did the researchers in Germany find?
these students were already good at school before they started とあるので A。
Q3. What does "it is not magic" mean here?
Teaching school subjects through English, known as CLIL or EMI, is often called killing two birds with one stone. A 2023 meta-analysis of 38 studies with 7,434 secondary students found large effects on English. However, the effect was smaller in studies that confirmed the two groups were similar at the start. This matters because students usually choose these classes.
A German study of 385 CLIL students and 5,578 other students found that the CLIL group already had better grades, family backgrounds and thinking skills. After these differences and extra English lessons were controlled, the added effect of CLIL was small and not significant. Subject learning also needs attention. In a large Swedish experiment, students who took a course in English got fewer answers right and dropped out more often.

Q1. What does "killing two birds with one stone" mean in this passage?
Q2. In the German study, what happened after the differences were controlled?
the added effect of CLIL was small and not significant とあるので B。
Q3. Why does the writer say "This matters because students usually choose these classes"?
Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and English-medium instruction (EMI) promise a double benefit: students master a subject and improve their English at the same time. A 2023 multilevel meta-analysis of 38 studies involving 7,434 secondary students reported large effects on English proficiency, especially for learners whose first language is related to English and for vocabulary.
But the same analysis revealed a warning sign. Studies that confirmed the comparability of CLIL and comparison groups found smaller effects. Selection appears to be the key issue. Complete survey data from German academic-track schools showed that CLIL students started with higher primary-school achievement, more favorable social backgrounds and stronger cognitive abilities, and had also received extra English lessons beforehand. Once these effects were statistically removed, the remaining CLIL effect was small and non-significant. The content side raises questions too.
Another German study found that CLIL classes had three rather than two weekly hours of history, yet the gains were comparable, and a randomized trial with 2,263 students in a Swedish online programming course showed lower test scores and higher dropout in the English version of the course. For Japanese learners, whose language is distant from English, these cautions may be especially relevant.
