Nearly six in 10 young people in Japan sleep six hours or less a night. A new survey found this in October. The survey asked 203 people aged 15 to 29.

Some young people in Japan use the phrase suimin cancel kaiwai. Suimin means sleep, and kaiwai means a group of people. The phrase describes people who cut their sleep to stay up late.

About 31 percent of the people in the survey tend to put other things before sleep. When they stayed up at night, more than half watched videos. More than half also used social media, and about 38 percent played games.

But many of them wanted more sleep. About 44 percent said they had no time to sleep more. Japan's health ministry suggests that junior high and high school students sleep about eight to 10 hours.
