Survey Puts Numbers on Japan's Sleep Cancel Slang
1An online survey released in Japan on Oct. 8 found that 58.1 percent of young people sleep six hours or less a night. The survey, timed for World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10, covered 203 people aged 15 to 29. It was carried out by an app company from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.
2News reports linked the results to suimin cancel kaiwai, a slang phrase that has spread on social media. Kaiwai is used online to mean a group of people who share a habit. The phrase belongs to a family of cancel kaiwai terms that describe people who skip or put off everyday tasks. People in the sleep version cut their sleep to enjoy social media, videos and games.
3The most common answer was five to six hours a night, chosen by 46.8 percent. Only 36.9 percent said they sleep seven to eight hours. More than one in 10 reported sleeping four hours or less.
4Many of the young people said they would like to sleep more. About 44 percent said they cannot find the time, while 22.2 percent said they have trouble falling asleep. Around 15 percent said sleeping feels like a waste of time. In total, 31.0 percent tended to put being awake or other activities ahead of sleep.
5When they stayed up, 57.6 percent watched videos and 57.1 percent checked or posted on social media. Japan's health ministry suggests that junior high and high school students get about eight to 10 hours of sleep. The survey was small, so its results may not reflect all young people in Japan.

An online survey released in Japan on Oct. 8 は「10月8日に日本で発表されたネット調査」、the most common answer ... chosen by 46.8 percent は「46.8%に選ばれた」。
