NASA's Perseverance rover has set a new record for driving on another world. By October 11, it had driven 45.22 kilometers on Mars. That is longer than a full marathon.

The old record belonged to Opportunity, another NASA rover. Opportunity drove 45.16 kilometers on Mars from 2004 to 2018. Perseverance beat that record in less than six years.

Perseverance landed on Mars in 2021. It can drive by itself. It takes pictures of the ground, finds dangerous rocks and chooses a safe path. More than 90 percent of its driving was done this way.

The rover has also collected 29 samples of rock and soil. It is now driving toward a new area on the west side of Jezero Crater.
