Perseverance Passes Opportunity to Set Off-World Driving Record
1NASA's Perseverance rover has driven farther than any other vehicle on another world, the space agency said on October 12. As of October 11, the six-wheeled Mars rover had covered 45.22 kilometers. The record came on the 2,006th Martian day, or sol, of its mission.
2The previous record of 45.16 kilometers was held by Opportunity, which explored Mars from 2004 to 2018. Opportunity needed nearly 15 years to cover that distance. Perseverance, which landed in 2021, passed it in less than six years.
3The rover drove most of that distance with a self-driving system called AutoNav. The system takes images of the terrain, maps hazards such as large rocks and plans a route while the rover keeps moving. The team calls this thinking while driving. It can work at or near the rover's top speed.
4Engineers on Earth pick points for Perseverance to reach, and AutoNav chooses the path between them. More than 90 percent of the total distance was driven this way, and the rover can cover up to 412 meters in a single sol. By comparison, Opportunity and its twin rover Spirit drove only about 5 percent of their distance this way.
5Along the way, Perseverance has collected 29 samples of rock and loose surface material. The rover is now heading toward an area called Lac de Charmes, beyond the western rim of Jezero Crater. Scientists said rocks in the area may be among the oldest in the solar system. NASA has extended the mission until around the end of 2028.

Opportunity, which explored Mars from 2004 to Perseverance, which landed in 2021, ...
