Cambridge Dictionary named parasocial its Word of the Year for 2025 on November 18. The adjective describes a connection that a person feels with someone they have never met. That someone can be a celebrity, a character in a book or film, or even an artificial intelligence. Cambridge said lookups of the word on its website jumped during the year.
ケンブリッジ辞典は11月18日、2025年の「今年の単語」に parasocial を選びました。この形容詞は、一度も会ったことのない相手に対して人が感じるつながりを表します。その相手は有名人のこともあれば、本や映画の登場人物、さらには人工知能(AI)のこともあります。ケンブリッジによると、この1年でウェブサイト上のこの言葉の検索が急増しました。
The term is almost 70 years old. In 1956, Donald Horton and Richard Wohl, two sociologists at the University of Chicago, used it to explain how television viewers bonded with people on screen. Colin McIntosh of Cambridge Dictionary said the word has moved from academic writing into everyday language.
この言葉は生まれてから70年近くたっています。1956年、シカゴ大学の社会学者ドナルド・ホートンとリチャード・ウォールは、テレビの視聴者が画面の中の人に親しみをいだく様子を説明するためにこの言葉を使いました。ケンブリッジ辞典のコリン・マッキントッシュ氏は、この言葉は学術的な文章から日常の言葉へと広がったと述べました。
The publisher said 2025 was marked by strong interest in one-sided relationships with celebrities, influencers and AI chatbots. When a famous pop star announced her engagement, many fans felt personally connected to the news, although they had never met the couple. Concern also grew about people forming emotional bonds with chatbots such as ChatGPT.
出版社は、2025年は有名人やインフルエンサー、AIチャットボットとの一方通行の関係に強い関心が集まった年だったと述べました。有名なポップスターが婚約を発表したとき、多くのファンは2人に会ったこともないのに、自分ごとのように感じました。ChatGPTのようなチャットボットに心のつながりを感じる人が増えていることへの心配も高まりました。
Simone Schnall, a professor of social psychology at the University of Cambridge, praised the choice. She said many people now form intense attachments to influencers, even though those attachments are completely one-sided.
ケンブリッジ大学で社会心理学を教えるシモーネ・シュナル教授は、この選出を高く評価しました。教授によると、いまでは多くの人がインフルエンサーに強い愛着をいだいていますが、その愛着は完全に一方通行です。
Parasocial usually comes before a noun, as in a parasocial relationship. Cambridge also highlighted slop, which means very low-quality online content, especially when it is made by AI. The dictionary added about 6,000 new words in 2025.
