Collins Dictionary has picked vibe coding as its Word of the Year for 2025. Vibe coding means making computer programs by talking to AI in everyday words. You do not need to write the code yourself.

コリンズ辞典が、2025年の「今年の単語」に vibe coding を選びました。vibe coding とは、ふだんの言葉でAIに話しかけてコンピューターのプログラムを作ることです。自分でコードを書く必要はありません。

For example, you can type a request for a simple game with a jumping cat. Then the AI writes the code for you.

たとえば「ジャンプするネコの簡単なゲーム」と頼む文を打ちこみます。すると、AIがかわりにコードを書いてくれます。

The phrase is very new. An AI expert named Andrej Karpathy first used it in February 2025. After that, people used it more and more.

この言葉はとても新しいものです。アンドレイ・カルパシーというAIの専門家が、2025年2月に初めて使いました。そのあと、使う人がどんどん増えました。

Other words on the list included coolcation and clanker. A coolcation is a holiday in a place with cool weather. Clanker is an unkind word for robots and AI.

候補のリストには、coolcation や clanker という言葉もありました。coolcation は、すずしい場所で過ごす休暇のことです。clanker は、ロボットやAIを悪く言うときの言葉です。

Collins announced its choice on November 6. Last year, the Word of the Year was brat.

コリンズは11月6日に発表しました。去年の「今年の単語」は brat でした。

Collins Dictionary named vibe coding its Word of the Year for 2025 on November 6. The term describes using artificial intelligence to write computer code by giving it instructions in everyday language. Instead of typing lines of code, a vibe coder explains the goal and lets the AI build the program.

コリンズ辞典は11月6日、2025年の「今年の単語」に vibe coding を選びました。この言葉は、人工知能（AI）にふだんの言葉で指示を出して、コンピューターのコードを書かせることを表します。コードを1行ずつ打ちこむ代わりに、バイブコーダーは目的を説明し、プログラムづくりはAIにまかせます。

The phrase was less than a year old when it won. Andrej Karpathy, a former head of AI at Tesla and a founding engineer at OpenAI, introduced it in February 2025. He used it to describe making an app with AI while hardly thinking about the code at all. Collins said use of the term has risen sharply since then.

Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, said the choice reflects how new technology is reshaping the English language. He also said AI is making coding possible for many more people. Collins chooses its word by studying a huge database of English that includes social media posts.

AI shaped other words on the ten-word shortlist as well. Clanker, an insulting word for robots and AI, became popular partly through the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Glaze means to praise someone too much, and taskmasking means pretending to be busy at work. Coolcation, a holiday in a place with a cool climate, also made the list. Micro-retirement, a break between jobs to follow personal interests, was another entry.

Collins has picked a technology word before. In 2023, its Word of the Year was AI. Last year, Collins chose brat, a word for a confident and independent attitude.
