ノウルーズ（ペルシャの新年）を英語で：読む・聞く・話す・遊ぶ

In Iran, the new year does not start at midnight. It starts at the exact moment of spring, when day and night are the same length. This moment can come in the morning, in the afternoon, or even late at night. Families sit around a special table and watch the clock together. When the moment comes, they hug and say, "Happy Nowruz!"

イランでは、新しい年は真夜中に始まりません。昼と夜が同じ長さになる、春のその瞬間に始まるのです。その瞬間は、朝のこともあれば、午後のことも、夜遅くのこともあります。家族は特別なテーブルを囲み、いっしょに時計を見つめます。その瞬間が来ると、みんなで抱き合い「ノウルーズおめでとう！」と言います。

Nowruz means "new day" in Persian. People have celebrated it for more than 3,000 years. Today, people celebrate it in Iran, Afghanistan, and many countries in Central Asia. In 2010, the United Nations made March 21 the International Day of Nowruz.

ノウルーズはペルシャ語で「新しい日」という意味です。人々は3000年以上もこの日を祝ってきました。今日、イラン、アフガニスタン、そして中央アジアの多くの国の人々がこの日を祝っています。2010年、国連は3月21日を国際ノウルーズデーにしました。

Before the new year, people clean their homes from top to bottom. On the last Tuesday night of the year, they make small fires in the street and jump over them. They ask the fire to take away their illness and bad luck.

新年の前に、人々は家を上から下まですっかりきれいにします。1年最後の火曜日の夜には、通りで小さな火をたいて、その上を飛びこえます。火に、病気や不運を持っていってくれるよう願うのです。

The special table is called haft-sin, or "seven S's." It has seven things with names that start with the letter S in Persian. There are green sprouts, apples, garlic, vinegar, and a sweet wheat pudding. Many families also add a mirror, candles, painted eggs, and a goldfish in a bowl.

その特別なテーブルは、ハフト・スィーン、つまり「7つのS」と呼ばれます。ペルシャ語でSの文字から始まる名前の品が7つ置かれます。緑の芽、リンゴ、ニンニク、酢、そして甘い小麦のプディングなどがあります。多くの家族は、鏡、ろうそく、色をぬった卵、そして鉢に入れた金魚も添えます。

The holiday lasts for almost two weeks. Children visit relatives, and older people give them new money. On the 13th day, families go outside for a big picnic. At the end of the day, they throw their green sprouts into a river. The old year floats away, and spring is finally here.

お祝いは2週間近く続きます。子どもたちは親せきを訪ね、年長者から新しいお金をもらいます。13日目には、家族で外へ出て大きなピクニックをします。その日の終わりに、彼らは緑の芽を川に流します。古い年は流れ去り、ついに春がやってきたのです。

Nowruz is one of the few festivals shared by people who speak different languages, follow different religions, and live under very different governments. Iranians, Afghans, Azerbaijanis, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, and Kurds all welcome spring on roughly the same day. In 2024, thirteen countries jointly listed it with UNESCO as part of the intangible heritage of humanity. Even in Stockholm and California, Iranian families far from home still set the same table at the same moment.

ノウルーズは、違う言葉を話し、違う宗教を信じ、まったくちがう政府のもとで暮らす人々が共有する、数少ない祭りの1つです。イラン人、アフガン人、アゼルバイジャン人、カザフ人、ウズベク人、クルド人が、みなほぼ同じ日に春を迎えます。2024年には13か国が共同で、人類の無形遺産としてユネスコに登録しました。ストックホルムやカリフォルニアでも、故郷を遠く離れたイラン系の家族が、同じ瞬間に同じテーブルを用意します。

Yet the festival's age has also made it political. Because its roots lie in Zoroastrianism, some religious leaders in Iran have criticized it, and the Taliban removed it from Afghanistan's list of public holidays in 2022. For Kurds, the bonfires of Newroz have long been a symbol of freedom, and in Türkiye the celebrations were tightly restricted for years.

けれども、この祭りの古さは、同時にそれを政治的なものにもしてきました。ルーツがゾロアスター教にあるため、イランの一部の宗教指導者は批判してきましたし、タリバンは2022年にアフガニスタンの祝日一覧からこれを外しました。クルド人にとって、ネウロズのたき火は長く自由のシンボルであり、トルコでは何年ものあいだ祝うことがきびしく制限されていました。

Even some well-loved customs are being questioned. Hajji Firuz, a cheerful street performer with a soot-covered face, is now criticized by Black Iranians and scholars who link the character to the history of slavery. Perhaps this is the real strength of an ancient festival: it survives not by staying the same, but by letting each generation decide what renewal means.

親しまれてきた習慣の一部でさえ、問い直されています。すすで顔を黒くした陽気な大道芸人ハージー・フィールーズは、いまでは黒人のイラン人や研究者から批判されています。彼らはこのキャラクターを奴隷制の歴史と結びつけています。おそらくこれこそが古い祭りの本当の強さなのでしょう。同じままでいることによってではなく、「新しくなる」とは何かを各世代に決めさせることで、生き残っていくのです。
