Early on a Sunday morning in spring, children run into the garden with baskets. They look under bushes and behind trees. Colorful eggs are hiding everywhere. Some are made of chocolate, and some are real eggs painted blue, pink, and gold. Who hid them? The Easter Bunny, of course.

Easter is the most important holiday for Christians. They believe that Jesus died on a cross on a Friday. Then on Sunday, he came back to life. Easter celebrates this new life. People go to church, sing happy songs, and eat big family meals.

The date of Easter changes every year, and the moon decides it. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. So it can be any Sunday from March 22 to April 25. Churches in Greece and Russia use an older calendar, so their Easter often comes later. In 2027, the two Easters will be five weeks apart.

Why eggs and bunnies? Long ago in Europe, people did not eat eggs for about 40 days before Easter. On Easter Sunday, they finally colored the eggs and ate them. The story of an egg-carrying bunny started in Germany in the 1600s. Later, German families took the bunny with them to America.

Today, each country has its own fun. In Poland, people throw water at each other on Easter Monday. In Australia, some children get chocolate bilbies, small native animals, instead of bunnies. And in Norway, many people spend the holiday reading crime stories. Easter is a day of new life, and every country celebrates it in its own special way.

Why Can't Christians Agree on One Easter?

B1–B2

In 2025, something unusual happened: Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians all celebrated Easter on the same day, April 20. It was also the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, where bishops first tried to give Christians a common way to set the date. Many church leaders hoped the coincidence would lead to a permanent shared date.

The problem is not the rule itself, which both sides accept, but the calendar used to apply it. Western churches switched to the Gregorian calendar after 1582, while Orthodox churches still calculate Easter with the older Julian calendar and its lunar tables. As a result, the two dates can be up to five weeks apart, as they will be in 2027. In other years they fall on the same Sunday, so families with both Catholic and Orthodox members sometimes celebrate twice and sometimes only once.

For many believers, changing the calculation is not a simple technical fix. The Julian calendar is part of their identity, and giving it up can feel like surrendering to the West. The debate shows how a question about the moon can also be a question about history, power, and belonging.
