People in a very large country usually share institutions rather than a way of life. There are two reasons. First, distance makes daily life different: climate, food and even the hour on the clock. The union formed in 1922 stretched across eleven time zones. Second, what they do share is administrative: the same money, the same school subjects, the same army. For these reasons, a large country is held together by systems, which is why changing those systems can break it.
とても広い国に住む人たちが共有しているのは、暮らし方よりも制度のほうだ。理由は2つある。第一に、距離は日々の暮らしを変える。気候も食べ物も、時計の時刻さえ違う。1922年にできたあの連邦は、11の時間帯にまたがっていた。第二に、実際に共有しているのは行政的なものだ。同じ通貨、同じ教科、同じ軍隊。以上の理由から、広い国は仕組みによってつながれており、だからこそ仕組みを変えると壊れることがある。
