英語の日付の書き方・読み方

「9月17日」は英語でどう書いて、どう読むのか。アメリカ式とイギリス式の違い、序数の読み方、年号の読み方まで、この1ページで終わらせます。

1. アメリカ式とイギリス式

アメリカ式September 17, 2026月 → 日 → 年。日と年のあいだにコンマ
イギリス式17 September 2026日 → 月 → 年。コンマは入れない

数字だけで書くと危険です。同じ 03/04/2026 が、アメリカでは3月4日、イギリスでは4月3日になります。 国をまたぐメールでは、月をつづりで書く（4 March 2026）のがいちばん安全です。

書類でよく見る 2026-09-17 は、国際規格（ISO 8601）の書き方です。年→月→日の順で、どの国でも同じ意味になります。

2. 読み方は「序数」で読む

書くときは September 17 でも、読むときは17を「17番目」の形（序数）で読みます。

アメリカでは the を省いて September seventeenth と読むのがふつうです。イギリス式では the ... of ... の形をよく使います。

つづりに注意するのは fifth（five ではない）・eighth（t は1つ）・ninth（e が消える）・twelfth（v が f に）の4つです。

3. on・in・at の使い分け

onon September 17 / on Monday / on my birthday日・曜日（1日を指すもの）
inin September / in 2026 / in the morning月・年・季節・午前午後
atat 7:30 / at night / at Christmas時刻と、ひとまとまりの期間

入試での狙われ方はここです。in the morning なのに on Monday morning になります。 曜日がついた瞬間、その朝は「特定の1日の朝」になるので on です。

4. 年号の読み方

年は2桁ずつに割って読むのが基本です。

2000年台の10年間（2000〜2009）は割れないので two thousand (and) eight と読みます。 2010年からは twenty ten のように2桁ずつに戻す人が多く、two thousand ten も間違いではありません。 0 は oh と読みます（1905 = nineteen oh five）。

紀元前は BC（before Christ、年の後ろ）、紀元後は AD（ラテン語 anno Domini、年の前）。 宗教色を避けた BCE / CE もよく使われ、どちらも年の後ろに置きます。

5. 日付をたずねる・答える

What's the date today?今日は何日？It's September 17.
What day is it today?今日は何曜日？It's Sunday.
When is your birthday?誕生日はいつ？(It's) on September 17.

What day は曜日、What date は日にちを聞いています。ここを取り違えると会話がかみ合いません。

「今日は何の日？」を英語で言うなら What day is today? ではなく What is today? や What's special about today? のほうが近い言い方です。
