なぜこの日？バレンタインデーのちょうど1か月後に、お返しを贈る日。1978年ごろ、飴の業界団体や福岡の菓子店・石村萬盛堂のマシュマロのお返しの呼びかけから広まった、日本生まれの習慣です。
