This print is from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, a series Hiroshige made late in his life. A sudden shower pours down on Shin-Ōhashi Bridge over the Sumida River. People on the bridge run, covering themselves with hats and mats. A single man stands on a raft in the river. The far bank fades into a gray shadow in the rain.
This series uses a tall format and bold designs to show famous places in Edo. Here the bridge stretches diagonally from the lower left toward the right. We seem to look down on it from high above. The rain is made of dark and light lines in two directions, printed on top of each other. Together they show a heavy downpour.
In 1887, Van Gogh copied this print in oil paint. He even added a border with Japanese-style characters. His painting is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Because it is a woodblock print, there are many impressions of this design, in museums like the Brooklyn Museum. But we do not know where the impression in this image is kept.
It is raining hard on a big bridge. People run with hats on their heads. A man stands on a raft in the river. Vincent van Gogh copied this print with oil paints!
Van Gogh collected Japanese prints. In 1887, he copied this one in oil paint. He even copied Japanese characters he could not read onto the border. You can feel his love for Japan. Around the same time, Van Gogh also copied Hiroshige's plum tree print in oil.
'Atake' comes from the Atakemaru, a giant warship of the shogunate. It was kept there in the early Edo period. The ship was taken apart long before, but the place kept the name. A piece of history hides in the title.
The two seals at the upper right read 'Snake 9' and 'aratame' ('examined'). They show the print passed censorship in the ninth month of the old calendar in 1857. Prints had to be checked by officials before sale.
The series grew because it was popular. It ended with 119 prints, one of them by Hiroshige II. Hiroshige himself died in 1858, before the series was finished. Still, it is seen as one of Hiroshige's greatest works, a grand tour of Edo through the seasons.
