Museum manners

  1. 1

Please do not touch the artworks.

    No flash photography.

    Pencils only, please.

Please leave large bags in the lockers.

    Please keep your voice down.

No food or drinks in the galleries.

Let others have a look, too.

Excuse me, may I ask a question?

Pro tips

Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art

In a quiet mountain town in Tochigi stands a beautiful museum designed by Kengo Kuma. The building is covered in thin slats of local Yamizo cedar, which create stripes of light and shadow as you walk. Its roof and walls were renewed in 2025–26. Inside, you can take your time with ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, shown in seasonal themes.

Hoki Museum

This is one of the few museums in the world devoted only to realist painting. Even up close, many works look like photographs, and the skill of the brushwork is amazing. The building was designed for the paintings: there are no picture rails on the walls, and the floor is made of a soft material so your feet do not get tired. The galleries also face a lovely forest.

Hokusai-kan Museum

In the small town of Obuse in Nagano, there is a museum focused on Hokusai’s original paintings, not prints. Its highlight is the ceiling paintings of a dragon and a phoenix that Hokusai painted for a festival float. You can feel the energy of his brush up close, in a way that prints cannot show. The museum turned 50 in 2026 and is a special place for Hokusai fans.

Rokuzan Art Museum

Among the trees of Azumino stands a brick building that looks like a church. It opened in 1958, paid for by donations from about 300,000 people, to protect the works of sculptor Ogiwara Morie (Rokuzan), who died young. His powerful works, such as Woman and The Miner, are moving, and the quiet garden and building stay in your memory. You can also feel his friendship with Takamura Kotaro.

Shoji Ueda Museum of Photography

At the foot of Mt. Daisen in Tottori, there is a museum devoted to photographer Shoji Ueda. From inside the building, designed by Shin Takamatsu, you can see Daisen reflected upside down in the water. Ueda’s playful, dreamlike photos and the view outside the window come together in an experience you can only have here.

Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art (Nagi MOCA)

In a small town in Okayama, this museum was built so that the art and the building are one. Arata Isozaki worked with three groups of artists to create it. In the Sun room by Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, copies of the Ryoanji rock garden are built into a cylinder-shaped room, and just standing there makes your body feel strange. Photos cannot show what it is really like.

The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum Japan

The studio and home in Mure, Takamatsu, where sculptor Isamu Noguchi lived and worked late in his life, is now a museum. More than 150 sculptures, a storehouse he moved here, his house, and a sculpture garden feel like one big work of art. Visits are by reservation only and groups are small, so you can spend quiet time with the stones.

Tanaka Isson Memorial Art Museum

Japanese-style painter Tanaka Isson moved to Amami Oshima at the age of 50. He worked in a silk factory while painting the island’s subtropical birds and plants. One of his paintings was accepted for the Seiryusha exhibition in 1947, but the works he made on Amami were almost unknown during his lifetime and became famous only after his death. In galleries inspired by Amami’s traditional raised storehouses, his paintings full of southern light will touch your heart.
