One black line cuts through the sky! Sesshū's winter in a small painting.
Autumn and Winter Landscapes by the Zen monk-painter Sesshū is a pair of hanging scrolls and a National Treasure. This is the winter scroll. We see snowy rocky mountains, bare trees and the roofs of buildings in the distance. At the lower right, a traveler in a hat walks along a snowy path. In the center, a sharp black line shoots up into the sky. The painting is only about 48 cm tall, but you can feel the bitter cold.
Sesshū was born in Bitchū, now Okayama, and studied painting while training as a monk at Shōkokuji Temple in Kyoto. In 1467, in his late forties, he sailed to Ming China. There he saw real Chinese mountains and great paintings. Back in Japan, he created his own style of ink painting, with bold outlines and solid shapes that make rocks feel hard.
Later, Sesshū lived in Yamaguchi and traveled widely. He kept painting even after the age of 80. His powerful style deeply influenced later artists, like the Kano school and Hasegawa Tōhaku. Tōhaku even called himself 'the fifth generation after Sesshū.' This winter scene often appears in textbooks as a symbol of Japanese ink painting.

The black line running up the middle is probably the edge of a cliff. But it seems to cut right into the sky, and people explain it in many ways. This line gives the whole painting its sharp, cold feeling.
