At night, even lutes and pots are monsters! A parade of tool spirits.
This handscroll shows a lively parade of monsters through the capital at night. You look at it from right to left. A blue demon with a spear runs out first. Then come monsters made from tools like lutes, kotos and pots, and animal-like creatures. At the end, a huge glowing red ball chases them, and they all run away. The most famous version is the Muromachi-period Shinju-an scroll at Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, an Important Cultural Property. This image is a later copy of the Shinju-an design, probably made in the Edo period.
Most of the monsters are tsukumogami, spirits of old tools that have come to life. Famous monsters such as kappa or mountain witches do not appear. There is no written text, so the story moves on through pictures alone. The Shinju-an scroll has long been said to be by the court painter Tosa Mitsunobu, but there is no firm proof, and the real artist is unknown.
The scroll was so popular that it was copied many times. More than 60 similar scrolls have been found in Japan, and they are sorted into four groups. The Shinju-an scroll is the standard for comparing them. Its funny monsters lead to later monster pictures, and even to the monster characters in today's manga and anime.
Monsters march through the city at night. Many of them are old tools, like pots and musical instruments. They look funny, not scary. At the end, a big red ball comes. The monsters run away!

There is an old belief that tools gain a spirit and turn into monsters after 100 years. Such monsters are called tsukumogami. In this scroll, a lute grows arms and legs, another monster drags a koto, and another wears a pot. Maybe the scroll also reminds us to take care of old things.
At the end of the scroll, a huge glowing red ball appears, and the monsters flee from it. Some say it is the rising sun, and others say it is the fire of the Buddha's power. No one knows for sure. Either way, the night parade is over.
Night parade scrolls were very popular and were copied again and again, mostly in the Edo period. More than 60 are known today, and they are divided into four groups by their designs. Monsters were added or changed with each copy, so comparing them is part of the fun.
The 'hundred' in 'Hyakki Yagyō' does not mean exactly 100. It means 'many'. Long ago, people believed that many demons paraded through the capital at night and feared bad luck if they met them. In this scroll, those monsters look rather funny.
