Story

This is a portrait of a samurai sitting firmly in black court robes, with a crown, a flat scepter called a shaku and a sword. In the frame at the top left, a text names 'Sei-i Taishōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo' and praises him for defeating the Taira family and founding the shogunate in Kamakura. The painting in this image is in the British Museum in London.

This painting is based on the National Treasure portrait at Jingoji Temple in Kyoto, said to be of Yoritomo. The Jingoji portrait is said to be by Fujiwara no Takanobu, a master of portraits in the Kamakura period, and is famous from Japanese history textbooks. The British Museum version follows it, but the face is harder, the robe has no pattern and the background is blue. From the style of the writing, it is thought to date from the Nanbokuchō period or later.

In 1995, the art historian Yonekura Michio argued that the Jingoji portrait shows not Yoritomo but Ashikaga Tadayoshi, the younger brother of Ashikaga Takauji. This caused a great stir, and the debate is still not settled. The British Museum painting, on the other hand, is seen as evidence that by the Nanbokuchō period at the latest, people believed the Jingoji portrait showed Yoritomo. The British Museum bought it in 1920.

A samurai sits in black clothes. He wears a tall hat and has a sword. The words on the top left say his name: Minamoto no Yoritomo. This painting is in London. A famous painting in Kyoto looks almost the same.
