Story

Sesshū's View of Ama-no-Hashidate is a National Treasure. It looks down on Ama-no-Hashidate in northern Kyoto Prefecture, one of the Three Famous Views of Japan. A long, thin sandbar lined with pine trees stretches across the sea. Around it are shrines, temples, mountains and small boats. Place names are written in tiny letters all over the painting. Viewers can travel over the scene like flying birds.

The pagoda of Chionji Temple in the painting was built in 1501. So the painting was made after that, when Sesshū was over 80. He probably visited the place and sketched it. But there is no spot high enough to see all this at once. He combined views from many places in his mind.

A legend says Ama-no-Hashidate was once a ladder to heaven used by the god Izanagi, and it fell into the sea. The painting is made of about 20 pieces of paper joined together. Some experts think it was a sketch or draft, not a finished work. Even so, its skillful brushwork made it a National Treasure.
