Was the dark river made by changing the color of silver leaf!? A mysterious masterpiece from Kōrin's last years.
Red and White Plum Blossoms by Ogata Kōrin is a National Treasure. A white plum tree is on the left, a red plum tree is on the right, and a dark river swirls between them. The trees look real, but the river is drawn like a pattern. This mix looks very modern. It is thought to be one of Kōrin's last works, and it is kept at the MOA Museum of Art in Atami.
Two main subjects at the edges and an open center: people often say this layout is like Sōtatsu's Wind God and Thunder God, which Kōrin copied. The mossy spots on the trunks use tarashikomi, letting wet paint blur. The swirling water pattern is called 'Kōrin waves,' and it later spread to many crafts and designs.
In the 2000s, researchers debated whether the background was really gold leaf. A scientific study in 2011 confirmed that it was. Silver remains in the river, and silver sulfide was found in its black parts. So researchers think silver leaf was darkened with sulfur. The MOA Museum of Art shows these screens every year around plum blossom season.
This picture has two plum trees. The white one is on the left. The red one is on the right. A dark river runs in the middle. Scientists found silver in the river. Kōrin may have used sulfur to turn the silver black!

X-ray studies in the 2000s found less gold than expected for gold leaf, and people asked if it was painted with gold powder instead. But in 2011, scientific tests using digital microscopes and X-rays confirmed that the background is gold leaf.
Silver remains in the river, and silver sulfide was found in its black parts. So researchers think Kōrin may have used sulfur to darken the silver leaf on purpose. He may have used silver to make a black river, not a shining one.
A simple plum flower made of five round petals is called a 'Kōrin plum.' It is still used today in kimono patterns, Japanese sweets and many designs. Kōrin's designs still live in everyday life after 300 years.
Kōrin deeply admired Sōtatsu and copied his Wind God and Thunder God. Some think this layout, with the main subjects at both sides and space between them, was his answer to Sōtatsu. He may have learned from a master and given his own answer.
