Story

On a gold background, deep blue morning glories bloom and stretch their vines across the screen. There are only blue flowers, green leaves and thin vines. With no ground or fence, the flowers dance across the screen like a pattern. It was painted by Suzuki Kiitsu in the late Edo period. It is one of a pair of six-panel screens, and it is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Kiitsu was the leading pupil of Sakai Hōitsu, who loved the art of Ogata Kōrin and brought the Rinpa style back to life in Edo. After his teacher died, Kiitsu created his own world with clear colors and bold compositions. In this screen, he repeated similar flowers and leaves in a rhythm and used the curving vines to add movement. It also has the feel of a kimono pattern.

The screen entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1954. For a long time, Kiitsu was seen only as 'Hōitsu's pupil'. In recent years, however, his sophisticated urban style has gained new appreciation, and a major exhibition of his work was held in Japan in 2016–2017. He is now seen as one of the leading painters of Edo Rinpa.
