Blue flowers bloom on a gold screen. They are morning glories. Morning glories open early in the morning. There are only flowers, leaves and vines. The picture looks like a beautiful pattern.

On a gold background, deep blue morning glories bloom and stretch their vines across the screen. There are only blue flowers, green leaves and thin vines. With no ground or fence, the flowers dance across the screen like a pattern. It was painted by Suzuki Kiitsu in the late Edo period. It is one of a pair of six-panel screens, and it is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

🦉 Fun Fact! In the later Edo period, growing morning glories became a craze in Edo. 'Henka asagao', with unusually shaped flowers and leaves, were especially popular. Two major booms occurred, one around the Bunka–Bunsei eras and another around the Kaei–Ansei eras. For people in Edo, the morning glories on this screen were familiar and fashionable flowers.

江戸は「朝顔ブーム」だった 江戸時代の後半、江戸では朝顔の栽培が大流行しました。とくに、花や葉がふしぎな形に変わる「変化朝顔」が人気で、文化・文政のころと嘉永・安政のころの2回、大ブームが起きています。この屏風の朝顔も、江戸の人びとにとって身近で、おしゃれな花でした。
