Do you stay up all night before a test? Science says there is a better way. In a French study, one group learned foreign words in the evening, slept, and studied them again the next morning.
Another group learned in the morning and studied again that evening, without sleep. The sleep group needed about half as much practice. They also remembered the words better one week later.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How much practice did the sleep group need?
The sleep group needed about half as much practice.
Q3. In this passage, "stay up all night" means ...
Many students cram all night before an exam, but a better schedule may be to learn, sleep and then review. In a study published in 2016, a team in Lyon, France, asked 40 adults to learn pairs of unfamiliar foreign words and their meanings until they could answer all of them correctly. One group studied in the evening, slept, and relearned the words the next morning.
The other group studied in the morning and relearned them the same evening, without sleeping. Both groups had a gap of about 12 hours. The sleep group needed about half as many attempts to relearn the words, and they remembered them better one week and even six months later. Sleep seems to help organize and strengthen new memories.

Q1. How long was the gap between the two study sessions for both groups?
Both groups had a gap of about 12 hours.
Q2. What was the main difference the study focused on?
Q3. What can we infer from the passage?
正解は A。
Late-night cramming remains a common exam strategy, yet research on sleep and memory suggests that the timing of study may matter as much as its amount. In a 2016 study, a team in Lyon, France, asked 40 adults to learn unfamiliar foreign words paired with their meanings until they reached perfect accuracy, and then to relearn them about 12 hours later.
One group learned in the evening, slept, and relearned in the morning; the other learned in the morning and relearned that evening after staying awake. The sleep group needed only about half as many relearning attempts and showed better retention both one week and six months later. These results fit the broader view that sleep helps consolidate newly acquired memories, and that sleeping soon after learning may reduce interference from new information.
The study has clear limitations, though. The sample was small, and because the groups also studied at different times of day, the effects of daily body rhythms and daytime distractions cannot be fully separated from those of sleep itself. Also, few studies have tested such schedules in real classrooms. Even so, learning in the evening and reviewing the next morning is a reasonable, low-cost strategy.
