Many people say, "We forget 70 percent of what we learn in one day." This idea comes from the forgetting curve. But it is a mistake. The scientist Ebbinghaus measured how much time he saved when he learned the same list again.
So the memory does not fully disappear. One part of the advice is true, though. Studying a little on different days works better than studying everything the night before a test.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
(Studying a little on different days works better)という内容なので C。
Q2. What did Ebbinghaus measure?
measured how much time he saved when he learned the same list again とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "disappear" means ...
The forgetting curve is often explained as "people forget 70 percent of what they learn within a day." However, Hermann Ebbinghaus, who published the curve in 1885, did not measure how much he forgot. He memorized lists of meaningless syllables and then recorded how much time he saved when relearning them later.
Even when the curve dropped, the memory had not completely gone, because relearning was still faster than the first time. What matters more is the spacing effect. A 2006 review of hundreds of experiments confirmed that spreading study over several days works better than cramming. A 2008 online experiment with more than 1,350 people also showed that the further away a test is, the longer the gaps between reviews should be.

Q1. What did Ebbinghaus memorize in his experiments?
He memorized lists of meaningless syllables とあるので D。
Q2. What did the 2008 online experiment show?
the further away a test is, the longer the gaps between reviews should be とあるので A。
Q3. Why does the writer say the memory had not completely gone?
because relearning was still faster than the first time
Study guides love to quote Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, usually with the claim that we lose about 70 percent of new material within a day. That reading is misleading. In his 1885 work, Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized lists of nonsense syllables and measured savings, the reduction in effort needed to relearn a list.
A savings score of around 30 percent after one day means relearning took about 30 percent less effort, so a foundation of memory was still there. It does not mean 70 percent was forgotten. A 2015 replication in Amsterdam, in which one participant repeated the procedure, produced a curve of similar shape. Both studies relied on a single person and on unusual materials. The practical advice built on this work stands on firmer ground.
A 2006 meta-analysis of hundreds of experiments confirmed the spacing effect. Spacing is strongly supported for vocabulary and facts, although nobody has yet worked out the best schedules for complex skills or whole school curricula. A 2008 online study of more than 1,350 people added a useful detail. The best gap between reviews grows as the time until the test lengthens, so a test a month away calls for wider gaps than one next week.
