When you learn new words, do you read them silently or say them out loud? Research shows that we remember words better when we read them aloud. This is called the production effect.
Saying a word gives your memory extra clues, because you moved your mouth and heard your voice. But do not read everything aloud. It works best when you say only the important words.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. When does reading aloud work best?
It works best when you say only the important words.
Q3. In this passage, "silently" means ...
Saying words out loud helps you remember them, according to research on the production effect. In 2010, MacLeod and colleagues at the University of Waterloo in Canada showed people a list of words and asked them to read some aloud and some silently. On a later test, the words read aloud were remembered better.
One explanation is that spoken words become distinctive because they carry extra information, such as the movement of your mouth and the sound of your voice. A 2018 study found that saying a word yourself worked better than hearing a recording of your own voice. However, the effect is strongest when only some items are spoken, so reading a whole textbook aloud may help less.

Q1. What did the 2010 study ask people to do?
asked them to read some aloud and some silently とあるので A。
Q2. What did the 2018 study find?
saying a word yourself worked better than hearing a recording of your own voice とあるので D。
Q3. Why might reading a whole textbook aloud help less?
the effect is strongest when only some items are spoken
Reading aloud can look like a habit for young children, but research on the production effect suggests it genuinely helps memory. In 2010, MacLeod and colleagues at the University of Waterloo had people read word lists, some items aloud and others silently. On a later recognition test, the spoken words were remembered better. The leading explanation is distinctiveness. Saying a word adds motor and auditory information, so spoken items stand out later.
A 2018 study by Forrin and MacLeod refined this account. It compared four conditions: reading silently, hearing someone else read, hearing a recording of one's own voice, and speaking in the moment. Speaking in the moment came out best, which points to several components adding up. The effect is largest when spoken and silent items are mixed, because the contrast is what makes the spoken items distinctive.
A 2013 meta-analysis found a benefit even when one group read everything aloud. Most studies have used word lists with recognition or recall tests, so there is little evidence about longer texts or long-term retention. The most efficient use of the effect is to read aloud only the parts you most want to remember.
