How can you remember more? Many students read their textbooks again and again. But this is not the best way. Research shows that it is better to close the book and try to remember.
You can also quiz yourself with word cards. It also helps to study a little on different days, not all at once. Reading aloud, teaching a friend, sleeping well, and exercising can help, too.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
How can you remember more?
Q2. What do many students do, according to the passage?
Many students read their textbooks again and again.
Q3. In this passage, "quiz yourself" means ...
Which study methods really help you remember? In 2009, researchers asked 177 college students how they studied. Most said they reread their notes or textbooks, and only a few tested themselves. Rereading makes the material look familiar, so students feel they have learned it, but this feeling can be misleading.
In 2013, a large review compared ten study techniques. Only two were rated highly effective. They were practice testing and spreading study sessions over time. Rereading and marking text with a highlighter pen were rated low.
Other helpful habits include mixing different types of problems, reading aloud, studying as if you will teach someone, getting enough sleep, and exercising. Above all, practice pulling information out of your memory, for example by closing your notes and writing down what you remember.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. Which two techniques were rated highly effective in the 2013 review?
Only two were rated highly effective. They were practice testing and spreading study sessions over time.
Q3. Why might students keep rereading even though it is not very effective?
Rereading makes the material look familiar, so students feel they have learned it とあり、「覚えた気になる」から続けてしまうと推測できるので A。
Asked how they study, most of 177 college students in a 2009 survey said they reread their notes and textbooks, and relatively few quizzed themselves. Rereading is comfortable. It makes material feel familiar, and that familiarity creates an illusion of competence. Students tend to pick strategies that feel productive, even though the research on what actually works is unusually clear.
A 2013 review of ten common techniques rated only two as highly useful, practice testing and distributed practice. Highlighter marking and rereading got low ratings. In a 2006 experiment, students who recalled material in a test format remembered more a week later than students who simply restudied it, and a 2006 synthesis of hundreds of experiments confirmed the benefit of spacing.
Mixing different problem types, reading aloud, preparing to teach, sleeping well and exercising have also shown benefits. Testing usually pays off on delayed tests, and on an immediate test rereading can match or even beat it. The evidence linking exercise to memory comes mostly from older adults and animals, so its direct effect on exam scores is uncertain. For an exam next month, recalling the material on several separate days and sleeping well have the strongest support.
