What happens if you stop using social media for a week? In a 2022 study in Britain, 154 adults were put into two groups by chance. One group stopped using apps like Instagram and TikTok.
The other group used them as usual. After a week, the first group felt better and less worried. But when we look at many studies together, the effect is small.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many adults took part in the 2022 study?
154 adults were put into two groups とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "worried" is closest in meaning to ...
People often feel they spend too much time on social media. In 2022, Jeffrey Lambert and his team at the University of Bath tested what happens after a one-week break. They randomly divided 154 adults into two groups. One group stopped using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok for a week, while the other continued as usual. After the week, the break group reported higher well-being and lower scores for depression and anxiety.
However, studies that combine many experiments show a more mixed picture. One analysis found only a small improvement, and another found no clear effect. Another study reported that people who quit felt cravings and boredom, and many used social media at least once during the break.

Q1. What did the break group report after one week?
reported higher well-being and lower scores for depression and anxiety とあるので B。
Q2. What did studies combining many experiments show?
show a more mixed picture. One analysis found only a small improvement, and another found no clear effect.
Q3. What can we infer from the last sentence?
Does stepping away from social media really improve mental health? A 2022 randomized controlled trial in Britain offers some encouraging evidence. Jeffrey Lambert and colleagues assigned 154 adults either to stop using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok for one week or to continue as normal. Compared with the control group, those who took a break reported higher well-being and lower depression and anxiety scores, with reduced TikTok and Twitter use partly explaining the improvements in depression and anxiety. Random assignment reduced the possibility that healthier people simply chose to quit.
Even so, the study relied on self-reports measured only once, a week later, and participants knew which group they were in, so expectations may have influenced their answers. Broader evidence is more cautious. A 2025 meta-analysis of 32 papers involving about 5,500 people found a small benefit from restricting social media, while another 2025 meta-analysis of ten studies found no clear effect on mood or life satisfaction.
A 2018 Austrian study also reported increased cravings and boredom, with about 60 percent of participants using social media at least once during their break. Some researchers argue that how people use social media matters more than how long.
