ダイアウルフ復活？絶滅したオオカミの子ども誕生に科学者から疑問の声

An American company said in April 2025 that it had brought back the dire wolf. Dire wolves were large wolves that lived in North America. They died out more than 10,000 years ago.

2025年4月、アメリカのある会社が、ダイアウルフをよみがえらせたと発表しました。ダイアウルフは北アメリカにすんでいた大きなオオカミです。1万年以上前に絶滅しました。

The company, Colossal Biosciences, showed three white wolf pups. The company said the pups were dire wolves. The pups live in a large area of nature with tall fences around it.

その会社、コロッサル・バイオサイエンシズは、3頭の白いオオカミの子どもを公開しました。会社は、それがダイアウルフだと言いました。子どもたちは、高いフェンスに囲まれた広い自然の中で暮らしています。

The scientists studied DNA from old dire wolf bones. Then they changed 20 small parts of a gray wolf's DNA. Dogs gave birth to the pups.

科学者たちは、ダイアウルフの古い骨からとったDNAを調べました。そして、ハイイロオオカミのDNAの小さな部分を20か所変えました。子どもたちを産んだのはイヌでした。

However, many other scientists do not agree with the company. They say the pups are just gray wolves with a few changes. Dire wolves and gray wolves became different animals millions of years ago. About a month before, the same company showed mice with long hair like a mammoth.

でも、ほかの多くの科学者は会社の意見に賛成していません。子どもたちは、少し変えられただけのハイイロオオカミだと言うのです。ダイアウルフとハイイロオオカミは、何百万年も前に別の動物に分かれていました。その約1か月前、同じ会社はマンモスのような長い毛をもつネズミも発表していました。

An American biotech company said on April 7, 2025, that it had brought back the dire wolf, a predator that died out more than 12,500 years ago. The company, Colossal Biosciences, introduced three snowy-white pups named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi. Many scientists quickly disputed the claim.

Dire wolves once roamed North America, and many people know the name from a famous fantasy TV series. To create the pups, researchers read ancient DNA taken from two fossils, a tooth and a piece of skull. They then made 20 changes to 14 genes in gray wolf cells. The changes targeted body size, head shape and coat color.

ダイアウルフはかつて北アメリカを歩き回っていた動物で、有名なファンタジードラマでその名前を知っている人も多いでしょう。子どもをつくるために、研究者たちは歯と頭骨の一部という2つの化石から取り出した古代のDNAを読み取りました。次に、ハイイロオオカミの細胞にある14の遺伝子に、20か所の変更を加えました。変更のねらいは、体の大きさ、頭の形、毛の色でした。

The edited embryos were placed in dog mothers, which gave birth to the pups. The white coats came from switching off two genes, not from copying dire wolf DNA. The animals now live on a preserve of more than 2,000 acres, surrounded by a fence about three meters high.

編集された胚は母親役のイヌに移され、そのイヌたちが子どもを産みました。白い毛は、ダイアウルフのDNAを写したのではなく、2つの遺伝子のはたらきを止めることで生まれたものです。動物たちはいま、高さ3メートル近いフェンスに囲まれた、2000エーカー（約8平方キロ）以上の保護区で暮らしています。

Critics said the pups are simply modified gray wolves. Dire wolves and gray wolves split into separate lineages millions of years ago, so their DNA differs in far more than 20 places. One geneticist said hundreds or even thousands of changes might be needed. A paleontologist also questioned the white fur, noting that dire wolves lived in places without snow, such as the area around today's Los Angeles.

Colossal's chief science officer, Beth Shapiro, said she understood the debate but still called the animals dire wolves. About a month earlier, the company had shown off a woolly mouse with mammoth-like fur. The company described the mouse as a step toward bringing back the woolly mammoth.
