- 何か(ものの種類):*It's a kind of ___.*(〜の一種です)
It's made of ___. / It looks like ___.*
We use it to ___. / It's used for ___.*
- *Tatami is a kind of traditional Japanese floor mat.*
- *It's made of rice straw and a woven rush grass cover.*
- *We sit and sleep on it, so we don't wear shoes in tatami rooms.*
- *Tatami mats have a nice, fresh smell when they're new.*(新しい畳はいい香りがする)
- *The size of a room is often measured in tatami mats.*(部屋の広さは畳の枚数で表すことが多い)
- *For example, a "six-mat room" is a common size for a bedroom.*(例えば「6畳」は寝室によくある広さ)
- *The size of one tatami mat can be slightly different depending on the region.*
和室(Japanese-style room)
- *A Japanese-style room has tatami floors and sliding doors.*(和室は畳の床と引き戸がある部屋)
- ふすま(fusuma):*sliding panels used to divide rooms*(部屋を仕切る引き戸)
- 床の間(tokonoma):*an alcove where we display a scroll or flowers*(掛け軸や花を飾るくぼんだスペース)
- *A kotatsu is a low table with a heater underneath and a blanket around it.*(こたつは、下にヒーターがついていて、周りに布団をかけた低いテーブルです)
- *You put your legs under the blanket to stay warm.*(足を布団の中に入れて温まります)
- *Many Japanese houses don't have central heating, so a kotatsu is a cozy way to stay warm in winter.*(セントラルヒーティングがない家も多いので、こたつは冬に温まる心地よい方法です)
- *People often eat mandarin oranges at the kotatsu.*(こたつでみかんを食べるのが定番です)
- *Once you get in, it's really hard to get out!*(一度入ると出られなくなるんだ!)
cozy(居心地がよい、暖かくて快適な)は、こたつにぴったりの形容詞です。
- *The genkan is the entrance area of a Japanese house.*(玄関は日本の家の入り口部分です)
- *It's a little lower than the rest of the floor.*(ほかの床より少し低くなっています)
- *We take off our shoes there before stepping up into the house.*(そこで靴を脱いでから、家に上がります)
- *We take off our shoes to keep the floor clean.*(床を清潔に保つためです)
- *It's especially important in rooms with tatami, because we sit and sleep on the floor.*(床に座ったり寝たりするので、畳の部屋では特に大切です)
- *We usually wear slippers inside, but not on tatami.*(家の中ではスリッパをはくけど、畳の上では脱ぎます)
- *There are special slippers for the bathroom.*(トイレ専用のスリッパがあるよ)
- *A Japanese futon is a thin mattress that we lay on the floor at night.*(日本の布団は、夜に床に敷く薄いマットレスです)
- *In the morning, we fold it up and put it in the closet.*(朝はたたんで押し入れにしまいます)
- *This way, we can use the room for other things during the day.*(そうすると、昼間は部屋をほかのことに使えます)
- *It's a large closet for storing futons and other things.*
- *In Japan, we wash our bodies outside the bathtub before getting in.*(日本では、湯船に入る前に外で体を洗います)
- *The bathwater is often shared by the family, so we keep it clean.*(お湯を家族で使うことが多いので、きれいに保ちます)
Q: Why do Japanese people take off their shoes?
A: *Mainly to keep the house clean. Also, we often sit on the floor, so it feels natural.*
Q: Is it comfortable to sleep on the floor?
A: *Yes, it's more comfortable than you might think. The futon is soft enough, and some people say it's good for their back.*(思ったより快適だよ。
Q: Do all Japanese houses have tatami rooms?
A: *Not all of them. Many modern homes and apartments have mostly Western-style rooms, but some still have one tatami room.*(全部じゃないよ。
- *It depends on the family.*(家庭によるよ)
- *It's becoming less common these days.*(最近は減ってきている)
