A Vermeer stolen twice, and given to a museum while it was still missing!
A woman is busy writing a letter at a table. Behind her, a maid folds her arms and looks out of the window. She is probably waiting for the letter to be finished. On the floor lie a red seal, a stick of sealing wax, and something that may be a letter or a letter-writing manual. Vermeer painted this around 1670–1671, late in his life.
Light comes through the window on the left and shines through the white curtain. The window has a picture made of colored glass. The object on the floor may be a letter that the woman threw away, but it may also be a letter-writing manual. The big painting on the wall shows baby Moses being saved from the river. The same picture appears, smaller, on the wall in The Astronomer.
In the 20th century, the painting belonged to Sir Alfred Beit, a rich man who lived at Russborough House in Ireland. It was stolen from there twice, in 1974 and 1986. Beit gave it to the National Gallery of Ireland while it was still missing. It was found in 1993 and finally arrived at the museum.

A woman writes a letter. Her maid waits behind her. Some things are on the floor. This painting was stolen two times! The police found it in 1993.
In April 1974, an armed group broke into Beit's house. They cut the Vermeer, a Goya and other paintings from their frames with screwdrivers. The group was led by Rose Dugdale, an Englishwoman from a rich family. The paintings were found eight days later in a cottage in the south of Ireland.
In 1986, the Dublin gangster Martin Cahill and his gang stole it from the same house again. No ransom was paid, and the painting was missing for seven years. In 1993, it was recovered at Antwerp airport in Belgium, in a trap set up by the Irish police.
In 1987, Beit decided to give his collection of great paintings, including this one, to the National Gallery of Ireland. At that time, the Vermeer was still missing. It was an unusual gift: a painting he did not have in his hands.
On the floor are a red seal, a stick of sealing wax, and an object that may be a letter or a letter-writing manual. Maybe she read a letter, threw it down, and is now writing a quick reply. The serious woman and the relaxed maid looking outside make a fun contrast.
