A letter scene glimpsed through a doorway. In 1971, a thief cut it from its frame.
A maid has just handed a letter to a woman holding a musical instrument. The woman has stopped playing and looks up at the maid with a questioning look. The maid smiles back. We look from a dark room through an open door into a bright room. Vermeer painted this around 1669–1670. It is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The woman holds a cittern, a string instrument in the lute family. In Dutch paintings of the time, music and letters often hinted at love. On the floor, slippers and a broom have been left lying around, as if the housework has been interrupted. The dark wall and the curtain in front work like a frame. They make us feel as if we are secretly peeking into the room.
By the end of the 17th century, it may have belonged to the Polish king John III Sobieski. The Rijksmuseum bought it in 1893. In 1971, it was stolen in Belgium and badly damaged when it was cut out of its frame. After almost a year of restoration, it was saved.
A maid gives a letter to a woman. The woman looks up at the maid. We see them through a door. In 1971, a young man stole this painting. He cut it out with a potato peeler!
In September 1971, this painting was on loan to a museum in Brussels. A 21-year-old man hid in a closet until closing time. He tried to take it out through a window, but the frame was too big. So he cut the canvas out with a potato peeler and put it in his back pocket.
The thief contacted a newspaper. He demanded 200 million Belgian francs for starving refugees from Bengal. He once buried the painting in a forest, but when it rained, he dug it up and hid it in his pillowcase. He was arrested about two weeks later, and the painting returned to the Netherlands in October.
On the wall behind the two women hangs a picture of a ship at sea. This is the only Vermeer painting that includes a seascape. Love was often compared to a voyage at that time. Some people think the rough sea stands for the troubles of love.
Above the seascape hangs a landscape with a traveler walking along a sandy road. Some think it hints that the letter writer is far away. Vermeer used pictures on the wall to tell a story without words.
