Stolen in 1974 and found in a churchyard! A girl playing the fashionable instrument of her day.
A girl in a yellow jacket with white fur plays the guitar. She smiles at someone outside the picture. Light comes from a window on the right and shines on her curly hair, her pearl necklace and her white satin skirt. Vermeer painted this around 1672, a few years before he died. It is now in Kenwood House in London.
The girl sits at the far left, and part of her body is cut off by the edge. This is one of Vermeer's boldest compositions. Her guitar has five pairs of strings. It was becoming fashionable at the time and was starting to replace the lute in popularity. A golden rose decorates the sound hole.
Around 1888–1889, Edward Cecil Guinness of the famous Guinness beer family bought this painting. He later became the Earl of Iveagh. When he died in 1927, Kenwood House in north London and his art collection were given to the nation. The painting has been shown there since the 1920s.

The guitar in the painting is a luxury one, decorated with ivory, ebony, tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl. Its strings were made from animal gut and were played with the fingers. The guitar was easier to play than the old lute, and it was popular with stylish young people.
