Is it better to take notes by hand or on a laptop? A famous study in 2014 said that writing by hand was better. But later, other scientists did the same test again. They found almost no difference in test scores.
So the tool is not very important. What is important? Write ideas in your own words, and do not copy every word. Also, turn off messages on your laptop.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What did the later scientists find?
They found almost no difference in test scores.
Q3. In this passage, "copy every word" means ...
In 2014, a study titled "The pen is mightier than the keyboard" became famous. Mueller and Oppenheimer found that university students who typed notes on laptops tended to copy the lecture word for word and did worse on questions that tested understanding. The explanation was that typing is so fast that you can write without thinking.
However, when other researchers repeated the experiment in 2019 and 2021, the handwriting group did not score higher. A meta-analysis also found almost no difference once distractions from other apps were removed. Two things seem to matter more than the tool: putting ideas into your own words, and avoiding distractions such as notifications. How you review your notes later is also important.

Q1. According to the 2014 study, why did laptop users do worse?
tended to copy the lecture word for word and did worse on questions that tested understanding とあるので B。
Q2. What happened when researchers repeated the experiment?
the handwriting group did not score higher とあるので A。
Q3. What does the passage suggest is most important?
Two things seem to matter more than the tool
A 2014 paper by Mueller and Oppenheimer, titled "The pen is mightier than the keyboard," was soon cited as proof that laptops harm learning. In their experiments, students who typed notes during a video lecture copied more of it word for word and did worse on conceptual questions than students who wrote by hand. The authors argued that slower handwriting forces people to summarize, and summarizing deepens processing.
Direct replications told a different story. In 2019, Morehead and colleagues found no consistent difference between the two methods. In 2021, Urry and colleagues tested 142 students and confirmed that laptop users copied more verbatim, but they found no handwriting advantage in test scores. A meta-analysis published online in 2021, which excluded digital distractions, put the difference at essentially zero.
The question is not completely closed, since a 2024 meta-analysis reported a small advantage for handwriting, which grew when students reviewed their notes. Almost all of these studies, however, used short video lectures in a laboratory, and few have tracked the effects across a full semester. What students do with their notes probably matters more than the tool, whether that means rephrasing ideas, turning off notifications or using notes for self-testing.
