Feeling lonely and having few contacts with other people are not the same thing. A US team studied about 277,000 adults in the UK. At age 50, people who were both lonely and isolated could expect fewer healthy years.
The difference was bigger for mental health, like depression, than for body health. For men, it was about 5.8 years. But we do not know yet if loneliness is the cause.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. For men who were both lonely and isolated, how many fewer years without mental illness were expected?
For men, it was about 5.8 years.
Q3. In this passage, "isolated" means ...
第1文の having few contacts with other people が isolated(孤立した)の説明になっているので C。
Loneliness, the feeling of being alone, is different from social isolation, which means having little contact with others. A research team led by Tulane University in the US analyzed data from 277,489 adults in the UK who did not have any of seven major diseases at the start. They estimated how many years people could expect to live without physical or mental illness.
At age 50, people who were both lonely and isolated were expected to have fewer disease-free years, and the gap was larger for mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. A healthy lifestyle seemed to reduce the link for isolation, but not clearly for loneliness. However, the study cannot prove cause and effect.

Q1. What is the difference between loneliness and social isolation?
Q2. What did the study find about people who were both lonely and isolated?
the gap was larger for mental disorders such as depression and anxiety とあるので C。
Q3. What can we infer about a healthy lifestyle?
A が正解。
Earlier research has linked weak social relationships to a higher risk of death, but less is known about whether loneliness and isolation affect physical or mental health more. A study published in Nature Communications by a team led by Tulane University addressed this by analyzing 277,489 UK Biobank participants who were free of seven major conditions, including diabetes, cancer, depression and anxiety, at baseline. Treating loneliness, a subjective feeling, and social isolation, an objective lack of contact, as separate exposures, the researchers estimated life expectancy free of physical and mental disease.
At age 50, participants who were both lonely and isolated were projected to have 2.4 (women) and 1.7 (men) fewer years free of major physical disease, but 3.7 and 5.8 fewer years free of mental disorders, respectively. A healthy lifestyle attenuated the losses associated with isolation, whereas no significant modification was found for loneliness. But the observational design leaves the direction of the relationship uncertain, since early symptoms of depression may lead people to withdraw socially. In addition, loneliness was measured by a single self-report, and UK Biobank participants tend to be healthier and wealthier than the general population.
