Is intelligence decided by our genes? Studies of twins say that about half of the differences in intelligence between people are linked to genes.
But this does not mean that half of your own intelligence comes from your parents. The number is about groups of people, not one person. There is also good news. A large study found that each extra year of school raises IQ by about one to five points.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How much can one extra year of school raise IQ?
each extra year of school raises IQ by about one to five points とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "linked to" means ...
You may have heard that intelligence is about 50 percent genetic. This idea comes from twin studies. Identical twins share almost all of their genes, while non-identical twins share about half, so comparing them shows how much of the differences between people is linked to genes.
However, heritability describes differences within a group, not one person's abilities. It can also change with the environment. In one American study, heritability was almost zero among poor families but high among richer ones. Heritability also rises with age, from about 41 percent at age 9 to about 66 percent at age 17. Meanwhile, a review of more than 600,000 people found that each extra year of education raises IQ by one to five points.

Q1. What is the main message of the passage?
Q2. According to the passage, what is the heritability of intelligence at age 17?
from about 41 percent at age 9 to about 66 percent at age 17 とあるので B。
Q3. What can be inferred from the American study about poor and richer families?
In a study of about 11,000 twin pairs, the heritability of general cognitive ability rose from about 41 percent at age 9 to 66 percent at age 17. The researchers suggested that growing children increasingly choose experiences that suit their genetic tendencies. Such findings are often boiled down to one line, that intelligence is about 50 percent genetic, and the number has some basis. A meta-analysis of fifty years of twin research found an average heritability of about 49 percent across human traits.
But heritability is easy to misread. It describes how much of the variation within a particular population is linked to genetic differences. It does not split one person's ability into genes and effort. It also shifts with circumstances. One study of seven-year-old American twins found heritability near zero in poor families.
Later work found that the pattern holds in the United States but disappears or reverses in Western Europe and Australia. A meta-analysis of more than 600,000 people, using data such as changes in compulsory schooling laws, concluded that each extra year of education raises IQ by roughly one to five points. A trait can be highly heritable and still respond to the environment.
