Feeling lonely may be bad for our body. Scientists in China and the UK studied the blood of about 42,000 people. They checked about 3,000 kinds of proteins.
Lonely people had more of some proteins linked to inflammation, the body's reaction to damage, and to fighting viruses. Some of these proteins were also linked to heart disease and stroke. But this does not prove that loneliness causes these diseases.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. About how many people's blood did the scientists study?
the blood of about 42,000 people とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "prove" means ...
Many studies have shown that people with strong social connections tend to live longer, but it is not clear how feelings like loneliness affect the body. In 2025, researchers from Fudan University in China and the University of Cambridge in the UK looked for clues in the blood. Using data from the UK Biobank, they measured 2,920 proteins in the blood of 42,062 people.
Many proteins linked to social isolation and loneliness were involved in inflammation and the immune system. More than half of them were also connected to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and death over about 14 years. The researchers note that social isolation and loneliness are different: one is an objective situation, and the other is a feeling.

Q1. What question did the researchers try to answer?
it is not clear how feelings like loneliness affect the body
Q2. What were many of the related proteins involved in?
were involved in inflammation and the immune system とあるので A。
Q3. According to the passage, how are social isolation and loneliness different?
最終文 one is an objective situation, and the other is a feeling。
Lonely and socially isolated people get sick and die early at higher rates, a link that decades of research have documented. How loneliness gets under the skin is less clear. In a 2025 study, researchers from Fudan University and the University of Cambridge searched for answers in the blood. They used data from 42,062 adults in the UK Biobank, measured 2,920 plasma proteins, and checked how each related to objective social isolation and to the subjective feeling of loneliness.
Many of the proteins they flagged are involved in inflammation, antiviral responses, and the complement system of immunity. More than half were linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, or death over about 14 years of follow-up. Most of these links are correlations. Loneliness was measured with short self-reports, and UK Biobank volunteers tend to be healthier than the general population.
To get closer to cause and effect, the team used Mendelian randomization, a method based on genetic data. It pointed to five proteins that loneliness itself may raise. One of them, ADM, is related to stress and to oxytocin, the so-called bonding hormone. Together, these proteins partly accounted for the link between loneliness and later disease.
