After World War II, people in Britain could not buy as much sugar as they wanted. This rule ended in September 1953.
Scientists studied 46,448 people born between 1951 and 1956. People who had little sugar before birth and until about age two were less likely to be diagnosed with anxiety as adults. But this study does not prove that sugar causes anxiety.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. When did the sugar rule end?
This rule ended in September 1953.
Q3. In this passage, "prove" means ...
In postwar Britain, sugar was rationed, which means each person could buy only a limited amount. Rationing ended in September 1953, and sugar consumption rose quickly. Researchers at the University of Surrey used this history as a natural experiment. They studied UK Biobank data from 46,448 people born between October 1951 and March 1956.
People who experienced rationing for about their first 1,000 days, from before birth to around age two, had about a 30 percent lower risk of diagnosed anxiety than people born after rationing ended. However, the actual difference was small: 5.79 percent compared with 6.28 percent. The study was published in Translational Psychiatry.

Britain's sugar rationing ended abruptly in September 1953. As a result, a person's birth date decided how long they had lived with scarce sugar, first in the womb and then as an infant.
Researchers at the University of Surrey used this natural experiment, analyzing UK Biobank records for 46,448 people born between October 1951 and March 1956. They compared them with a reference group born after all food rationing had ended. People exposed for roughly their first 1,000 days had a hazard ratio of 0.67 for diagnosed anxiety and 0.71 for depression. Groups with shorter exposure showed weaker links or none at all, the kind of dose-response pattern researchers look for. This is an observational study, though.
Postwar Britain differed from today in healthcare, infections, economic hardship and maternal stress, and those factors cannot be fully ruled out. Diagnoses were also recorded mainly from 1997 onward, so earlier cases may have been missed. One further check split the two results. When the team took adult sugar intake into account, the anxiety link held, but the depression link weakened until it was no longer statistically significant.

Q1. Why can this situation be called a natural experiment?
a person's birth date decided how long they had lived with scarce sugar
Q2. What happened to the link with depression after adult sugar intake was taken into account?
the depression link weakened until it was no longer statistically significant とあるので A。
Q3. Why can't this study prove that early sugar restriction prevents anxiety?
This is an observational study
