on time、on fire、on the phone、on sale。
at 7:00(時刻という「点」)、on Monday(カレンダーの上の1日という「面」)、in April(月という「入れ物」の中)と考えると、使い分けの見通しが少し良くなります。

English prepositions like on, in, and at have many meanings. We say "on the desk," but also "on the phone" and "on time."
Do we need to memorize each one? Some researchers say no. Each preposition has one core picture.
For example, "on" means touching something. Other meanings grow from that picture. In an experiment, students who learned with pictures did better on a translation test. But pictures are only a start.

on、in、at のような英語の前置詞には、たくさんの意味があります。「on the desk(机の上に)」と言いますが、「on the phone(電話で)」や「on time(時間どおりに)」とも言います。
1つずつ暗記する必要があるのでしょうか。一部の研究者は「いいえ」と言います。それぞれの前置詞には1つの中心となる絵(イメージ)があります。
たとえば、on は何かに接していることを意味します。ほかの意味はその絵から広がっていきます。ある実験では、絵で学んだ生徒の方が翻訳テストで成績がよくなりました。でも、絵は始まりにすぎません。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the core picture of "on"?
"on" means touching something とあるので B。
Q2. In the experiment, who did better on a translation test?
students who learned with pictures did better on a translation test とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "memorize" means ...
memorize は memory(記憶)の動詞で「暗記する」なので A。
Why does "on" appear in "on the desk," "on the phone" and "on sale"? Cognitive linguistics suggests that these meanings are not random. Each preposition has a core spatial image, and other meanings extend from it through metaphor. For "on," the core is contact or support, so a picture can be "on" a wall, and a person can be "on" the phone line.
In a 2018 study, 64 Cantonese-speaking learners practiced prepositions on a computer. Those who received feedback with image diagrams did better on a translation test than those who were only told whether they were right or wrong, although there was no difference on a fill-in-the-blank test. A 2024 replication with 81 learners found similar results, and the advantage lasted on a delayed test.

なぜ on は「on the desk」「on the phone」「on sale」に出てくるのでしょうか。
Q1. According to cognitive linguistics, how do prepositions get their many meanings?
other meanings extend from it through metaphor とあるので D。
Q2. On which test was there no difference between the groups in 2018?
there was no difference on a fill-in-the-blank test とあるので A。
Q3. Why is the 2024 study important?
A 2024 replication ... found similar results とあり、追試で再現されたことが重要なので B。
English says "on the desk," but also "on fire," "on the phone" and "on sale." Faced with this, learners often memorize each phrase separately. Cognitive linguistics offers another route. In this view, each preposition has a core spatial scene, such as contact or support for "on," and its other senses grow out of that scene through metaphor.
Even time expressions follow the pattern, with "at" for points, "on" for days and "in" for containers like months. Tyler and Evans mapped these networks systematically in 2003, and Boers had already proposed bringing the idea into classrooms.
In 2018, Wong, Zhao and MacWhinney had 64 Cantonese-speaking learners practice with a computer tutor that gave image-based, rule-based or simple right-or-wrong feedback. Every group improved. The image group beat the right-or-wrong group on translation, though not on fill-in-the-blank tests. A close replication with 81 Chinese-speaking learners in 2024 produced broadly consistent results, and the advantage held on a delayed test.
Boers's 2013 review sounded a warning. Many such studies are small, some effects are modest, and part of the benefit may come from deeper processing in general. Images make a good entry point, but learners still need to meet prepositions in many real sentences.

英語では「on the desk」と言いますが、「on fire」「on the phone」「on sale」とも言います。
Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
実験で効果が示され追試でも再現されたが、Boers の注意(小規模・控えめな効果)と最終文 Images make a good entry point, but learners still need to meet prepositions in many real sentences から C。
Q2. In the 2018 study, on which test did the image group outperform the right-or-wrong group?
The image group beat the right-or-wrong group on translation, though not on fill-in-the-blank tests. とあるので D。
Q3. What does "part of the benefit may come from deeper processing in general" suggest?
効果の一部はイメージ特有ではなく、深く考えて処理したこと一般による可能性がある、という限界の指摘なので A。
