In many classes, students listen to English and then answer questions. But they do not learn how to listen. Some teachers teach students to guess the topic first, check their understanding, and think about their mistakes after listening.
A study of 106 students found that this way of teaching worked. Weaker listeners improved the most. But in Japan, it did not clearly help beginners. They may need to practice English sounds first.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
聞き方(how to listen)を教える指導についての文章なので A。
Q2. Who improved the most in the study of 106 students?
Weaker listeners improved the most とあるので B。
Q3. What does "guess" mean in "guess the topic first"?
聞く前に話題を「予想する」という意味なので C。
Listening lessons often just test students. They hear a recording and answer questions. Metacognitive instruction is different, because it teaches learners how to listen. Before listening, they predict what they will hear. While listening, they check whether they understand. Afterwards, they reflect on what went wrong.
In a 2010 study, 106 university students learning French were taught by the same teacher with the same recordings, but only one group practiced these steps. That group did better on the final test, and weaker listeners gained the most. A 2022 meta-analysis of 45 studies found a medium effect overall.
However, when the method was tried with 129 beginner-level students in Japan, their confidence rose slightly but their scores did not clearly improve. Learners may need basic sound and word skills first.

Q1. What do learners do before listening in metacognitive instruction?
Before listening, they predict what they will hear とあるので B。
Q2. Why is the 2010 study convincing?
taught by the same teacher with the same recordings とあり、違いは手順の練習だけだったので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the Japanese study?
初級の学生では成績が伸びず、最終文で基本的な音と単語の力がまず必要かもしれないと述べているので C。
Traditional listening lessons tend to test comprehension rather than develop it. Students hear a recording, answer questions and check the key. Metacognitive instruction tries to change this by making the process of listening visible. Learners predict content before they listen, monitor their understanding as they go, and evaluate and solve problems afterwards.
An influential 2010 study tested this approach with 106 university learners of French. Both groups had the same teacher, the same texts and the same number of listenings, and only the experimental group was guided through the metacognitive steps. After a semester, that group outperformed the control group, and the less skilled listeners within it made the largest gains. A 2022 meta-analysis of 45 studies estimated a medium average effect for listening strategy instruction, though results varied widely.
The approach is not a universal fix, however. A Japanese study of 129 learners at CEFR A2 level found that the training made students slightly more confident but produced no strong evidence of better listening scores. Similarly, Chinese beginners benefited most when strategy training was combined with practice in recognizing sounds. These findings suggest a threshold, since learners need enough bottom-up skill to have something to monitor.
