Dictation means listening to English and writing down every word. Many people think it is boring and old. But research shows it can help your listening. Sometimes you know a word, but you cannot hear it in fast speech.
Dictation shows you these weak points. Maybe you missed a new word, or a short word like "to" or "the." Try one minute of audio with a script. Then check your mistakes and read the script aloud.

Q1. What is dictation?
Dictation means listening to English and writing down every word. とあるので C。
Q2. What does dictation show you, according to the passage?
Dictation shows you these weak points. とあるので A。
Q3. How long should the audio be, according to the passage?
Try one minute of audio with a script. とあるので D。
Dictation means writing down exactly what you hear. It looks old-fashioned, but researchers are looking at it again. Listening involves two kinds of processing. One is predicting meaning from what you already know.
The other is recognizing sounds and picking out words from continuous speech. Many learners have trouble with the second kind. They know a word on paper but cannot catch it when it is linked to other words in fast speech.
In 2021, researchers in Hong Kong analyzed 13 studies on this kind of training, mainly dictation and pronunciation practice, and found a moderate positive effect on listening. Dictation also works as a diagnostic tool. When you check your answers, you can see whether you missed an unknown word, linked sounds, a short weak word, or grammar.

Q1. Which kind of listening processing do many learners struggle with?
Many learners have trouble with the second kind. の second kind は「音を認識して単語を切り出す」処理なので B。
Q2. What did the 2021 analysis find?
found a moderate positive effect on listening とあるので C。
Q3. Why does the writer call dictation a "diagnostic tool"?
答え合わせで、未知語・音のつながり・弱く短い語・文法のどこで聞きのがしたかがわかる、と説明しているので D。
Dictation has long been dismissed as a dull relic of traditional classrooms, yet listening researchers are reconsidering its value. Comprehension depends on both top-down processing, which uses context and background knowledge to predict meaning, and bottom-up processing, which involves distinguishing sounds and segmenting a continuous stream into words.
Classroom practice tends to emphasize the former, while many learners actually fail at the latter: they recognize a word in print but miss it when it blends into connected speech. A 2021 meta-analysis by Jia and Hew examined 13 intervention studies of decoding training, mostly dictation and pronunciation instruction, and found a moderate effect on listening, with no clear sign of publication bias. Two individual studies are worth a look.
Elementary adult learners in Iran who did eleven dictations during a term improved more than a comparison group, and Chinese university students who did daily dictations in messaging-app groups improved more than students who practiced alone. That said, the evidence base is limited. The meta-analysis covered decoding training in general rather than dictation alone, and the two studies above were small and did not use random assignment. Dictation is perhaps most valuable as a diagnostic tool that reveals where comprehension breaks down.
