(Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1977)。

Have you ever started to like a song after hearing it many times in TV ads? This is called the mere exposure effect. We often like things more when we see or hear them again and again.
In one study, people liked strange words more when they saw them more often. But too much is not good. After many times, we can get bored.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened when people saw strange words more often?
people liked strange words more when they saw them more often とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "bored" means ...
The mere exposure effect means that people tend to like things more simply because they have seen or heard them many times. In a 1968 study, participants were shown meaningless words and unfamiliar faces between zero and 25 times. The more often they saw something, the more positively they rated it.
The effect can occur even when people do not remember seeing something. One explanation is that familiar things are easier for the brain to process, and this smoothness feels pleasant. In a classroom study, students rated women who had attended the lectures more often as more attractive, even though the women never spoke to anyone. However, too many exposures can make people bored.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
Q2. In the classroom study, what was surprising?
even though the women never spoke to anyone
Q3. According to the passage, why might familiar things feel pleasant?
familiar things are easier for the brain to process, and this smoothness feels pleasant とあるので A。
In a classic 1968 study, people were shown nonsense words, Chinese-like characters and yearbook photographs from zero to 25 times. The more often they had seen an item, the more favorably they rated it. This is the mere exposure effect, and it can work without our noticing.
In a 1980 experiment, people preferred shapes that had been flashed too briefly to be recognized. A leading explanation is processing fluency. Something we have seen before is easier for the brain to process, and we mistake that ease for liking. The effect turns up in social life, too.
Students rated women who had silently attended more of their lectures as more attractive. People also prefer their mirror image to a photograph of themselves, while their friends prefer the photograph. There are limits. A 1989 meta-analysis of over 200 experiments found that the effect levels off after 10 to 20 exposures.
A 2017 meta-analysis found an inverted-U pattern, with liking dropping after too many repetitions, although this was clear for visual stimuli and not for sounds. Repetition works best when the first impression is neutral or positive, and repeated contact with something people already dislike may only deepen their dislike.
