A phrase in Kansai dialect has become a buzzword among teenage girls in Japan. The phrase is Honma yade nande yanen shiran kedo. It is the title of a song by a new singing group.

関西弁のフレーズが、日本の10代の女の子たちのあいだで流行語になっています。そのフレーズは「ほんまやで なんでやねん しらんけど」です。これは、新しい歌のグループの曲のタイトルです。

Kansai dialect is spoken in Osaka, Kyoto and nearby areas. Honma yade means it is true. Nande yanen means why or come on. Shiran kedo means I do not know, though.

In April, the company Mynavi asked 610 girls aged 13 to 19 about trends. The phrase came third in the words group with 28.5 percent. Another survey of 1,000 junior high and high school girls put it fifth.

The song first became popular on TikTok. The group made its major debut with it on April 8. At the end of June, the group won the top prize at TikTok's trend awards in Japan.

Kansai dialect is used in Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. Honma yade means it is true, and nande yanen is a way of saying why or come on. Shiran kedo means I do not know, though. People add it after a statement to show that they cannot guarantee it is true.

Shiran kedo has been popular with young people outside the Kansai region for several years. In 2022, a Japanese money news website reported that young people in the Tokyo area were using it like internet slang.

The song is the debut single of Monaki, a four-member male vocal group produced by the leader of the singing group Junretsu. A preview of its chorus was played more than 700 million times on TikTok before the group made its major debut on April 8. On June 30, Monaki won the grand prize at TikTok awards for the top trends of the first half of the year in Japan.
