NASA said in March 2026 that an asteroid called 2024 YR4 will not hit the Moon. This was the end of a story that started more than a year before.

NASA has ruled out any chance that the asteroid 2024 YR4 will hit the Moon in 2032. The agency announced the result in early March 2026, using new observations by the James Webb Space Telescope. The announcement ended more than a year of close attention to the asteroid.

As astronomers tracked its path, the calculated chance of an Earth impact on December 22, 2032, kept rising. In mid-February 2025, the chance reached about 3 percent.

Then the numbers changed quickly. On February 19, 2025, observations from the Very Large Telescope in Chile cut the chance in half. Within days, the risk to Earth fell to almost zero. However, a small chance remained that the asteroid would hit the Moon, and later estimates raised that chance to 4.3 percent.
