The Asteroid That Will Miss Us

1NASA said in March 2026 that an asteroid called 2024 YR4 will not hit the Moon. This was the end of a story that started more than a year before.

2A telescope in Chile found the asteroid in December 2024. Scientists said it was about 40 to 90 meters wide. In February 2025, they said it had about a 3 percent chance of hitting Earth in 2032.

3Soon, new observations showed that it would miss Earth. But there was still a 4.3 percent chance that it would hit the Moon.

4By the spring of 2025, the asteroid was too far away for telescopes on the ground. In February 2026, scientists used the James Webb Space Telescope instead. With the new data, NASA said the asteroid will miss the Moon by about 21,200 kilometers.

本文の a 3 percent chance of hitting Earth は「地球にぶつかる確率」という意味。
