A capsule hotel gives you a pod rather than a room. The capsule is about the size of a single bed, with enough height to sit up, and it contains a mattress, a light, a small shelf and usually a screen. They are stacked in two rows along a corridor, and you close a blind or a panel rather than a door.
Everything else is shared: the bathroom, the lockers, a lounge. The first one opened in Osaka in 1979, and it is worth knowing who it was built for. Not travelers. Office workers who had stayed out drinking with colleagues, missed the last train, and needed somewhere cheap to sleep for five hours before going back to the office in the same shirt.

QIs it claustrophobic?
For some people, yes. You can sit up but not stand, and the opening is closed with a blind rather than a lockable door. If small spaces bother you, this is not the option to try.

世界初のカプセルホテルは1979年に大阪・梅田で開業した「カプセルイン大阪」で、設計は建築家の黒川紀章。彼は1970年の大阪万博で展示したカプセル建築の発想を持ち込んだ。黒川はメタボリズムという建築運動の中心人物で、東京の中銀カプセルタワービル（1972年）も同じ思想による。同ビルは2022年に解体された。カプセルの標準的な寸法はおおむね幅1メートル、長さ2メートル、高さ1.2メートル前後。宿泊料は数千円で、終電を逃した人向けの深夜料金を設ける施設もある。近年は訪日客向けに設計された高価格帯の施設も増えている。
