kapuseru hoterusleeping in a pod the size of a bed
Standard
Quiet Japanese capsule hotel interior, two levels of individual sleeping pods along one side of a narrow aisle.

A capsule hotel provides a bed-sized sleeping pod instead of a room, at a low price.

A capsule hotel gives you an enclosed pod roughly the size of a single bed, stacked in rows, with a shared bathroom and lockers. It was invented in Osaka in 1979, and its original customers were not tourists but office workers who had missed the last train home. Modern ones are clean, quiet and often surprisingly well designed.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

A capsule hotel gives you a pod rather than a room. The capsule is about the size of a single bed, with enough height to sit up, and it contains a mattress, a light, a small shelf and usually a screen. They are stacked in two rows along a corridor, and you close a blind or a panel rather than a door.

Everything else is shared: the bathroom, the lockers, a lounge. The first one opened in Osaka in 1979, and it is worth knowing who it was built for. Not travelers. Office workers who had stayed out drinking with colleagues, missed the last train, and needed somewhere cheap to sleep for five hours before going back to the office in the same shirt.

That is still a large part of the customer base. Newer capsule hotels have been redesigned for tourists, with better soundproofing and good bathhouses, and some are genuinely nice places to stay.

カプセルホテルかぷせるほてるkapuseru hoterusleeping in a pod the size of a bed

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs it claustrophobic?

AFor some people, yes. You can sit up but not stand, and the opening is closed with a blind rather than a lockable door. If small spaces bother you, this is not the option to try.

QIs my luggage safe?

AYou get a locker, and most places have good security and a staffed front desk. Large suitcases usually have to be left at reception rather than taken to the capsule.

QAre they mixed?

ATraditionally they were men only, and many still are. Women-only floors and women-only capsule hotels exist, but check in advance rather than assuming.

Background
