The standard explanation

Japan counts years twice: by the Western calendar and by an era name tied to the reigning emperor. The current era, Reiwa, began on the first of May 2019. Era names appear on official forms, coins, driving licenses and newspapers, so residents routinely have to convert between the two systems.

Japan runs two calendars at once. Alongside the Western year, there is an era name, and the year is counted from the start of that era. The current era, Reiwa, began on the first of May 2019, so 2026 is Reiwa 8. The previous eras were Heisei, Showa, Taisho and Meiji, and Japanese people use them as shorthand for whole periods, the way English speakers say the sixties.

The system came from China and the first Japanese era name is traditionally dated to 645. Until the nineteenth century era names could be changed mid-reign after a disaster or an auspicious omen; since the Meiji period one reign has meant one era.

Practically, this matters because official forms, coins, licenses and newspapers use era years, and people born in one era have to convert. The name Reiwa was taken from the Manyoshu, the first time a Japanese rather than a Chinese classic was used.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QHow do I convert between the two?

For the current era, add 2018 to the Reiwa year. Heisei began in 1989 and Showa in 1926, and because each era starts partway through a year the first and last years overlap. Most Japanese websites and forms provide a conversion table.

QWho decides the new era name?

The Cabinet decides it under a 1979 law, after consulting scholars and drawing on classical texts. The characters are chosen to be easy to write, not previously used as an era name, and to carry a favorable meaning.
