Himeji Castle

the white castle in Hyogo, the best-preserved original keep in Japan

Questions ↓Background ↓
Himeji Castle’s white keep and layered original defenses.
壱

The shortest answer that works

Himeji Castle is the finest surviving original Japanese castle, never destroyed by war or fire.

In 30 seconds

The standard explanation

Himeji Castle stands in Hyogo, about an hour west of Osaka. Its white plastered walls give it the nickname White Heron Castle. What makes it important is that it is original. Most Japanese castle keeps were lost to fire, to the Meiji government's demolitions, or to wartime bombing, and were rebuilt in concrete in the postwar decades. Himeji's keep survived all of it.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Himeji Castle is the one to see if you only see one Japanese castle, and the reason is not that it is the biggest or the oldest. It is that it is real. Japan once had many castle keeps; most burned, many were pulled down after the Meiji Restoration when castles became symbols of the old order, and others were destroyed in the air raids of 1945.

What people visit in Osaka or Nagoya today are concrete reconstructions with lifts inside. Himeji's keep came through all of it, and you climb it on steep wooden stairs in socks. It was among the first four sites in Japan listed as World Heritage, in December 1993, alongside Horyuji, Yakushima and Shirakami-Sanchi.

It is also a working piece of military design: the approach deliberately doubles back on itself so that attackers are exposed for as long as possible. Between 2009 and 2015 it went through a major restoration, and when the plaster came off white it was briefly criticized for looking too white, which has since weathered.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QAren't most Japanese castles original?

No, and this surprises people. Only twelve keeps survive from before the modern era. Osaka and Nagoya are postwar concrete reconstructions, complete with lifts, and many are frank about it on their own signage.

QWhy was it never attacked?

Largely timing and luck. It was completed in its present form in the early 1600s, just as the country entered two and a half centuries of peace, so it never had to defend itself. It also survived the 1945 bombing of Himeji when the surrounding city burned.

QIs it hard to climb?

Reasonably. There are six floors of steep wooden stairs, some closer to ladders, and you carry your shoes in a bag. It is not suitable for anyone who struggles with stairs, and there is no lift, which is precisely the point.
