  2. might as well A as B=BするくらいならAした方がまし

may well と may [might] as well4

  1. 1may well V(1)
=have good reason to V/It is natural that S should V。
You may well be angry with him.
  2. 2may well V(2)
過去のことなら may well have p.p.。
It may well rain this afternoon.
  3. 3may [might] as well V
The last bus has gone. We might as well walk.
  4. 4might as well A as B
You might as well throw your money away as lend it to him.

  1. 1cannot help -ing
=cannot but V(硬い)。
    I couldn't help laughing at his joke.
✕I couldn't help to laugh. → help laughing
  2. 2cannot … too 〜
=cannot … enough。
You cannot be too careful when you drive.
  3. 3cannot … enough
I can't thank you enough.(感謝してもしきれない)はお礼の定番。
    I can't thank you enough.
We cannot overemphasize the importance of sleep.

would rather・had better4

  1. 1would rather A than B
否定は would rather not V。
I'd rather stay home than go out in this rain.
✕I'd rather not to go. → I'd rather not go.
  2. 2would rather S+
    I'd rather you didn't tell her.
  3. 3had better V
否定は had better not V。
You'd better hurry, or you'll miss the bus.
✕You had not better go. → You had better not go.
  4. 4would like to V
would like O to V で「Oに〜してほしい」。
I'd like you to meet my parents.

used to の3兄弟と would

be used to V(受動態)が上位校のひっかけ。
